Oly High will be closed again on Thursday so there will be no practice.
Which will lead us into a two week long break. Please remember to do something physical over break. Go to the gym for a gentle workout, go for a run or erg. Just do something so you don't lose the muscle you have gained.
Shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions

Bus #68 Goes to Briggs YMCA
For anyone at OHS - who needs to get to Briggs YMCA for Winter Training, but doesn't have a ride ...
The #68 bus departs Olympia High School right after school every day at 2:45 and again at 3:15. The bus ride to Briggs is very quick (just 3-5 minutes). The cost for the ride is $1.00 (as of January 1 2009). There is a bus stop at the Briggs YMCA, at the YMCA parking lot on Henderson St. where you will get off.
To catch the bus, go out the south (North Street) exit from OHS and cross North Street. There is a bus stop on the south side of the road specifically for OHS. (If you accidentally take the bus that is on the same side of North Street as OHS, then you'll find yourself at the Safeway at Tumwater Square heading downtown. You can ask the bus driver for a transfer and get the driver to point you to the correct stop to catch the next $68 heading to Briggs YMCA.)

Winter Weather Accommodations
It is supposed to be cold this week, VERY cold by Washington standards! So, a few weather related changes and reminders.
1. There will be practice everyday UNLESS Olympia High School is canceled. Also, check this here blog for any last minute changes.
2. Wednesday practice will be held at the YMCA. There will be NO boathouse practice this week! Its too cold... So, we will be at the YMCA all week.
3. The exciting Millersylvania mud puddle madness, has unfortunately been canceled. Again, too cold. Its not supposed to get above freezing on Saturday and I don't won't to be outside in 20 something degrees and I'm guessing you probably don't either :) We will reschedue for sometime in Janurary when it will be warmer.
A few reminders:
Please don't walk/run/bike to practice this week. Its just too cold... If you need a ride, let me know! We can arrange something. Perhaps there is a parent who can pick-up from Oly H.S. this week.
If you are driving yourself, SLOW DOWN!! (I know I sound like a mom, but please...) If you live out in the country or can't get out due to ice, just let me know. I would rather you stay home and do something active than risk driving in unsafe conditions.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Stay warm,
Liz

Winter Taining: UPDATE!
Hi crew,
Winter training it getting off to a great start! There have been a few changes that I want you to know about.
First:
PJ got a full time job and will not be able to coach for winter training. I will be taking on both teams for the duration of winter. On Monday I will bring a weightlifting training circuit for the guys. This circuit will focus on increasing endurance, strength and flexibility. Download this PDF about weight training for rowing to learn a little more about it. I will be modifying it slightly to fit the YMCA facilities. If you have any questions let me know!
Also note that the days of practice: Monday -Thursday for ALL CREWS, we will be at the boathouse for erging on WEDNESDAYS! (Guys, you will continue with PJ for the rest of this (Dec. 1-4) week and I will take over on Monday the 8th)
Remember: there is still time to join for winter training if you want to. Contact either me or parent rep. Mike Ruth (Will and Nelson's dad).
Second:
I would like to set a date for the Millersylvania mud puddle workout. This is a 1 mile loop course with exercise stations. Lots of fun for team building and general muddiness :) I propose December 20th from 10 AM-12 PM but would like some feed back from rowers and parents.
I think that is all!
Thanks team!

Winter Training Forms Posted
Hello, OAR Junior Rowers
The Winter Training forms to register for the December-January training program are posted on the OAR website:
http://www.olympiaarearowing.org/SitePages_public/Rowing/Youth/junior.aspx
I have been sending out emails with the forms attached, too. And I've been phoning some of you to offer to answer any questions concerning Winter Training. I've been copying emails of rower parents also when I think that might help.
As you know, the Winter Training starts Monday Dec 1st. My wife (Maria) has offered to meet anyone from Olympia H.S. at the bus stop after school on the first day, to assist in using the #68 bus to take the short (6 minute) ride to the Briggs YMCA. We have some hope of carpooling a small group from Capitol H.S. as well, please contact me if you are interested.
If you are having trouble accessing the Winter Training forms, or you have questions about the Winter Training program, please phone me: 350-8115. Otherwise, please bring your forms and a check on Monday to the first practice.
I hope to see many of you at the Dec 1st startup at the Briggs Y on Monday.
****************
TO: OAR Youth Rowers : Winter Training starts next week!
WHERE: Briggs YMCA (see address, below)
WHEN: Meet at 3:30 on Monday Dec 1st. Ends at 5:15 pm
BRING: Registration forms (attached) and payment (bring a check)

The practices will be at the Briggs YMCA (Yelm Highway and Henderson St in South Olympia).
The training will be coached, four days a week until the end of January.
There will be no practices during the two weeks surrounding Christmas.
The cost is $144 if you are already a member of the YMCA. Anyone who does not already have YMCA membership will need to pay an extra $23 for the two month temporary membership.
You can register on-site (at the Briggs YMCA) on Monday the 1st. But if you are in Olympia over the Thanksgiving Holiday, I would be very glad to come to your home or work and get your registration forms in advance. Capitol: Talk to each other about carpooling. This is still in the works, if you have specific questions ask your coach.

Dates: Dec 1 - Feb 6 or 13 (depending on Tough Love)
Two week holiday break December 20th - January 4th
Novice Boys: Three days a week; Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Focusing on cross-training and erg times. Christina will post more details.
Novice and Varsity Girls: Four days a week, Monday-Wednesday-Thursday-Friday
(or some combination. This is flexible based on rowers schedules. Also, one day a week will be optional if you need to work on homework and such)
Girls will be working on an endurance strength training circuit along with focusing on distance ergs. The girls will also be attending Tough-Love indoor rowing regatta in mid-February. All of the girls will be together with Liz.
Varsity Boys: Four day a week,Monday-Wednesday-Thursday-Friday
(or some combination. This is flexible based on rowers schedules.)
The V. boys will be working on endurance with cross-training. They will also be doing a strength building circuit. More details from P.J. to come.
All- Crews!
We are planning 1-2 winter Millersylvania mud-puddle madness work-outs. These will be on a Saturday morning (not to early) at Millersylvania State Park, south of Olympia. Details to follow. Will be great fun!! These will be orginized "regatta style"

PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP IF YOU ARE PLANNING OR CONSIDERING DOING WINTER CONDITIONING!! REPLY TO THIS POST WITH YES/NO.
Have a great break team!!

Big Congratuatlions to the Girls Novice Team Also!!!!!
It is apparent upon further research that despite a disappointing finish in their race W 3v Junior 4+ ( *see experienced 4 person Junior boats) when matched with results from the W novice 4+ races (* see other novice girls 4+ boats) The girls boat did well and would have earned a 2nd place finish or ABOVE (*see first place) in all but the top seeded novice heat where they would have earned a fourth place finish out of 6 boats (*see top boats from giant boat clubs which have 20+ new rowers each season and practice 5 days a week). Further evaluation of these results confirm that the OAR Novice Girls team kicks butt.
Mysterious Happenings on Greenlake
Reports show that yesterday at the Greenlake Frostbite regatta the OAR Junior Novice 8+ earned a solid 2nd place finish the M OPEN Novice 8+ event. Participants are reported as saying "we thought we were going to lose" and "what?." Regatta officials and over the top excited coaches however confirm that the OAR Novice 8+ did in fact earn 2nd place ribbons on Saturday. Some might even go so far as to call this crew a SUCCESS. Bystanders were heard saying things like "that boat looks good" and "wow look how much bigger that other crew was." Despite knuckel-headery on the part of the crew represented and general negativity I feel secure further reporting a giant CONGRATULATIONS to the novice boys team!
Frostbite Regatta Thanks!
A big Congratulations and Way To Go to the Novice team for their participation in the Frostbite Regatta at Greenlake yesterday! Everyone did great!!! A big thanks to Maria Ruth for coordinating the food tent and for all the great support from all the parents who braved the weather! Also a big recognition and thanks to Gretchen and PJ for their incredible help and support!

Winter Conditioning!

Winter Conditioning!
The junior coaching team is at work on the Winter Conditioning Program which will begin on December 1st! The program schedule will follow the same days and times as the Fall and Spring rowing sessions: 3:30-5:30, Monday-Friday. PLEASE email PJ ASAP-(bliss360@mac.com) if you plan to participate! We would like to integrate as much input about activities from our rowers as possible. At this time we're planning to conduct the program from the boathouse for most of the week. We'll be biking, "erging", running hills and working out several times a week at 24-hour Fitness (you all have a free pass from 2:30-4:30). We'll discuss any other reasonable requests. We want this to be fun and productive. The success of our spring season depends on you!
Stay tuned for updates on this blog!

Portland Loop Regatta
Hi Crew,
We will talk more about the race on Saturday today at practice but here is an overview.
First off, here are directions to the boathouse/Oak Park:
(you can Google "Oak Park, Portland" for a map)
Merge onto I-5 S toward TUMWATER/PORTLAND (Crossing into OREGON).
Take EXIT 299A toward OR-43/LAKE OSWEGO
Stay STRAIGHT to go onto SW HOOD AVE/OR-43 S.
Keep RIGHT at the fork to go on OR-43 S.
Turn SLIGHT LEFT onto SELLWOOD BRIDGE.
SELLWOOD BRIDGE becomes SE TACOMA ST.
Turn LEFT onto SE 6TH AVE.
Turn LEFT onto SE SPOKANE ST.
Turn RIGHT onto SE OAKS PARK WAY.
The coaches and cox meeting is at 7:30AM. EVERYONE needs to be at the course before 7:00 to rig boats. The first race goes off the line at 8:30 and it takes at least half an hour to get to the start line so we will be launching around 8:00. Which means that when the coach and cox meeting is done the equipment needs to be ready and all rowers need to be ready to launch.
It looks like the weather will be less pleasant (rain) as the day wears on so dress appropriately. Bring an extra change of dry clothes including several pairs of socks. Each rower will only be racing once. Make sure you rest well and stay hydrated today and tomorrow. Remember: what you eat tonight is more important than what you eat Saturday morning.
If anyone has any question let PJ or I know!!
Pleas pass this info on to your parents.
Thanks,
Liz and PJ

Blogging 101
Hey team!
Welcome to blogging! Some of you may have done a bit before, perhaps for class. It is a great way of communicating with a large group. Make sure you check in every day or so, its easy to miss stuff. You can also have a "blog digest" sent to your e-mail so you can get the highlights. I will continue to send out an e-mail about important race stuff for the girls.
It is important to remember, this blog can be seen by anyone. It is a public blog, however only rowers on the team can post or comment on the blog space. Yes, your parents, relatives and masters rowers can see what we write here. Lets make sure it is respectful and appropriate. PJ and I have full veto and editing powers!!
This is a great space to talk about practice and races. I can post pictures and video from the days practice so you can see what I am talking about when I say you dip your hands at the catch. I can post line-ups for the week or race line-ups. You all can ask questions about technique etc.
Note for girls: This however is NOT the place to leave a note telling me you will not be at practice. You MUST continue to; (A) call/text me before practice or (B) e-mail me before practice!
Alright guys, have at it! Blogging can be great fun and I think it will work well for this team and the club.
-Liz
