Winter Training Forms Posted

Hello, OAR Junior Rowers

The Winter Training forms to register for the December-January training program are posted on the OAR website:
http://www.olympiaarearowing.org/SitePages_public/Rowing/Youth/junior.aspx

I have been sending out emails with the forms attached, too. And I've been phoning some of you to offer to answer any questions concerning Winter Training. I've been copying emails of rower parents also when I think that might help.

As you know, the Winter Training starts Monday Dec 1st. My wife (Maria) has offered to meet anyone from Olympia H.S. at the bus stop after school on the first day, to assist in using the #68 bus to take the short (6 minute) ride to the Briggs YMCA. We have some hope of carpooling a small group from Capitol H.S. as well, please contact me if you are interested.

If you are having trouble accessing the Winter Training forms, or you have questions about the Winter Training program, please phone me: 350-8115. Otherwise, please bring your forms and a check on Monday to the first practice.

I hope to see many of you at the Dec 1st startup at the Briggs Y on Monday.

You can register on-site (at the Briggs YMCA) on Monday the 1st. But if you are in Olympia over the Thanksgiving Holiday, I would be very glad to come to your home or work and get your registration forms in advance. Please contact me directly if you want to ask any questions about the Winter Training, or arrange for me to come and pick up your registration packet and payment.

Winter Training

Okay Crews, here is the "tentative" (yet to be approved by the board) winter training plan (with some small details up in the air).

Location: Briggs Community YMCA
We will be making plans and taking suggestions to make sure EVERYONE can find a mode of transportation to practice.
Oly H.S. There is a city bus (#68) or a bike lane directly from the HS to the Y.
Capitol: Talk to each other about carpooling. This is still in the works, if you have specific questions ask your coach.

Time: 3:30 - 5:30
Dates: Dec 1 - Feb 6 or 13 (depending on Tough Love)
Two week holiday break December 20th - January 4th

Novice Boys: Three days a week; Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Focusing on cross-training and erg times. Christina will post more details.

Novice and Varsity Girls: Four days a week, Monday-Wednesday-Thursday-Friday
(or some combination. This is flexible based on rowers schedules. Also, one day a week will be optional if you need to work on homework and such)
Girls will be working on an endurance strength training circuit along with focusing on distance ergs. The girls will also be attending Tough-Love indoor rowing regatta in mid-February. All of the girls will be together with Liz.

Varsity Boys: Four day a week,Monday-Wednesday-Thursday-Friday
(or some combination. This is flexible based on rowers schedules.)
The V. boys will be working on endurance with cross-training. They will also be doing a strength building circuit. More details from P.J. to come.

All- Crews!
We are planning 1-2 winter Millersylvania mud-puddle madness work-outs. These will be on a Saturday morning (not to early) at Millersylvania State Park, south of Olympia. Details to follow. Will be great fun!! These will be orginized "regatta style"

Your registration fee will include a three month full-membership to South Sound YMCA (Both Briggs and the Downtown branch).

Okay, so basic idea and overview with much more detail to be included with the registration forms which will be posted once the board approves our grand plan. If you have any questions feel free to ask your respective coaches.

PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP IF YOU ARE PLANNING OR CONSIDERING DOING WINTER CONDITIONING!! REPLY TO THIS POST WITH YES/NO.

Have a great break team!!

Big Congratuatlions to the Girls Novice Team Also!!!!!

It is apparent upon further research that despite a disappointing finish in their race W 3v Junior 4+ ( *see experienced 4 person Junior boats) when matched with results from the W novice 4+ races (* see other novice girls 4+ boats) The girls boat did well and would have earned a 2nd place finish or ABOVE (*see first place) in all but the top seeded novice heat where they would have earned a fourth place finish out of 6 boats (*see top boats from giant boat clubs which have 20+ new rowers each season and practice 5 days a week). Further evaluation of these results confirm that the OAR Novice Girls team kicks butt.

Mysterious Happenings on Greenlake

Reports show that yesterday at the Greenlake Frostbite regatta the OAR Junior Novice 8+ earned a solid 2nd place finish the M OPEN Novice 8+ event. Participants are reported as saying "we thought we were going to lose" and "what?." Regatta officials and over the top excited coaches however confirm that the OAR Novice 8+ did in fact earn 2nd place ribbons on Saturday. Some might even go so far as to call this crew a SUCCESS. Bystanders were heard saying things like "that boat looks good" and "wow look how much bigger that other crew was." Despite knuckel-headery on the part of the crew represented and general negativity I feel secure further reporting a giant CONGRATULATIONS to the novice boys team!

Frostbite Regatta Thanks!

A big Congratulations and Way To Go to the Novice team for their participation in the Frostbite Regatta at Greenlake yesterday! Everyone did great!!! A big thanks to Maria Ruth for coordinating the food tent and for all the great support from all the parents who braved the weather! Also a big recognition and thanks to Gretchen and PJ for their incredible help and support!
